Maybe I'm shocked because I really wasn't expecting to find ice on my windshield? Maybe it's that pumpkin spice flavoured everything is in the stores and coffee shops? Or maybe it's the chatter of snow possibilities that I heard over the weekend? Either way, fall denial or not, the weather has changed.
Lately in Hatha class we've been doing inversion poses and discussing their benefits. I realized, doing inversions, I can ensure the frost and cold weather stay outside and don't affect my body (improved blood circulation is the less esoteric health benefit).
The concept behind inversion poses is expressed in yoga texts as 'opposite process' -- facilitating a different perspective. From the purely physical point of view, this different perspective in inversion poses is literal - in terms of looking at the world from a different physical viewpoint - as well as involving the body being supported in a different way.
But also when we raise our feet above the head, gravity is assisting us to move impurities, trapped in the abdomen, towards agni, or 'fire'. Agni particularly relates to our 'digestive fire', and is thus located above our lower abdomen. So, by being upside down, and by using the deep and slow breathing typical of yoga, we help 'burn off' the impurities that were previously stuck.
If you can't make it to the yoga class, still try and do an inversion pose at home and keep the frost outside of your body.
For clarity on how to exactly do inversion poses call us or come by the studio.
